Did you know that the mean annual wage for makeup artists in 2021 was more than $120,000? With a number like that, this is a career that you should consider if you work in the beauty industry. These professionals are employed in the entertainment industry, typically working in the film or theater industry, although other makeup artistry career options are available. Like all high-paying careers, there are requirements.

Makeup Artistry Career Options

One of the careers makeup artists are employed in is entertainment, with the most obvious being the film industry in Hollywood. As this is the most prestigious market, it is also the hardest to break into. The next major employers are live theater companies, such as the ones found in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles

New Opportunities for Career-Minded Makeup Artists

While not as well-paying as Hollywood or major theaters, makeup artists can find work with local television and production companies. These jobs are an opportunity to build your resume and gain access to higher-paying work.

Makeup Artist Education

To provide any type of makeup application, many states require that you have an active esthetician license. The curriculum of these programs varies by the requirements of the state that they are located. However, common topics of study include:

  • Ethics
  • Sanitation
  • Skincare
  • Hair care
  • Makeup application
  • Nail care

Some cosmetology programs offer areas of concentration and makeup, or a related field could be offered. If your program offers electives, you should use these to get additional makeup courses.

Makeup Artist Requirements

Finishing cosmetology school may not be the only requirement for being a makeup artist. The next hurdle to pass is meeting the training hour requirements. These vary significantly by state, as some require just a few hundred while others require 1,000.

Some states waive the training hours requirement if you participate in an apprenticeship program. Through these programs, you train and gain experience under a practicing professional.

In most states, passing the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology exam is necessary. This exam comes in two parts, a written section where you answer questions and a practical exam that is hands-on.

Other Skills

Besides having the education and licensure requirements, there are other skills that are helpful to becoming a successful makeup artist. Having good interpersonal skills and making the right contacts is just as essential as being highly skilled. If you can’t afford a marketing company, you’ll need to know how to market yourself to get noticed, especially through social media.

Now that you know about what makeup artistry career options are offered, what are you waiting for?
